The adages that survived the “calamities of history” were derived from oracles, sages, poets, and philosophers. In later editions Erasmus added further adages and commentary. Some of the adages became take-off points for long essays—some very long indeed and capable of being printed as separate pamphlets (like the anti-war tractate Dulce bellum inexpertis : “War Is Sweet to Those Who Have Never Experienced It”). 2010-01-16 · The latest installment of the Adages of Erasmus continues the project of the University of Toronto Press, begun in 1974, to publish the Collected Works of Erasmus in scholarly, annotated editions that provide readers with translations of and information about the texts’ philological and historical details. Erasmus adages

His massive compendium, characterized by his wit, his elegance, his bursts of satire alternating with serious views, was among the most learned and widely circulated of Renaissance books. This fifth of seven volumes on the Adages continues from where the Collected Works of Erasmus volume 34 left off and includes 900 more adages from III iv 1 to IV ii 100. The aim of the Adages volumes in the CWE is to provide a fully annotated, accurate, and readable English version of the more than 4000 adages gathered, and commented on by Erasmus, sometimes in a few lines and sometimes in Most of Erasmus' adages are not sentences, but clauses, or even just phrases from works of literature written in classic Greek or Latin. For example, Adage 18 is a familiar expression "On the razor's edge", which forecasts the title of Somerset Maughm's novel, is first from Homer's The Iliad, meaning, as we do now, to be finely balanced between success or failure. Erasmus expected it would sell well and it did.

Collected Works of Erasmus: Adages: III iv 1 to IV ii 100, Volume 35: Erasmus, Desiderius, Grant, John N., Drysdall, Denis L.: Amazon.sg: Books

M. M. Phillips, Collected Works of Erasmus, 31 i / What a proverb is A proverb, according to Donatus, is 'a saying which is fitted to things and times.' Proverbs, chiefly taken from the Adagia of Erasmus, with explanations; and further illustrated by corresponding examples from the Spanish, Italian, French & English languages by Bland, R. (Robert), 1730-1816 ; Erasmus, Desiderius, d. 1536 Adagia Adagia (singular adagium) is the title of an annotated collection of Greek and Latin proverbs, compiled during the Renaissance by Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus. Erasmus' collection of proverbs is "one of the most monumental ever assembled" (Speroni, 1964, p. 1). 183 quotes from Erasmus: 'When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.', 'Your library is your paradise.', and 'In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.' Since, Erasmus insisted, emphasizing the oracular element of the adages, "in the proverbs of the ancient world is all its wisdom enshrined". The edition of 1508 – Venice, Aldus Manutius – apart from being considerably enlarged, also included interesting reflections on the adages themselves, as well as on Classical knowledge and language.
